(male announcer):this is the bay area news station,kron 4 news starts now. right now. two santa cruz city police officers are suspect. we're live at the scene. where tonight the lockdown. plus: teachers in alameda in district. details on what *could be alameda. now at eight. >> our department is in mourning. horrific day. we lost two exceptionally fine officers today. a deadly afternoon in santa cruz >> heard 50 to 100 shots fired. >> semi automatic and it was really really close. two officers and a suspect die in a pair of shootings. businesses and schools have been locked down for hours as swat teams make a citywide manhunt.

we are following this developing story. as the manhunt now heads into the nighttime hours. kron 4's rob fladeboe is live at the scene with new reaction from police. rob, what can you tell us? >> reporter: will of an open heart it is confirmed that there have been to officers- it has been confirmed. that there is been to officers-- two officers killed from the santa cruz police department. let us show you some aerial photos with our helicopter partnership with abc seven. they were investigating reports of bisexual assault. with other

sheriff's neighborhood and in the police chief's words, " closet by closet ". and there have been 3 schools that were on lockdown. he eventually, they were also let off of a bus transported safely from their school to a county building to be reunited with parents. that is the latest from san francisco. talking about. the first shooting was here at north branciforte avenue. .near where it intersects with doyle street. that's where two officers who were investingating a crime were shot and killed. a short time later.the second shooting.on doyle. that's where the suspect was fatally shot.

district. kron 4's charles clifford was in the east bay today and has details. >> reporter: on the steps of alameda city alameda education association called on school board members to approve a new contract for the district's teachers. long. >> reporter: the associations says that after 10 months of negotiations, the two sides have reached an impasse. not suprisingly, the main sticking point seems to be money. >> our last raise was in 2008, we are the second to the bottom in the county for compensation. >> reporter: the teachers are now seeking a 4.5 percent increase in pay, spread out over two years. thats something the school district seems unwilling to do. the teachers say the raise is needed in order to keep up with the cost of living. >> because our healthcare costs have gone up astronomically. we can't afford to live on the salary we are being paid. >> reporter: the school district was unavailable for comment tuesday but they did release a statement, saying, "we are scheduled to continue negotiations with an outside mediator on monday. we are looking forward to reaching an agreement."

>> pam: the coast guard called off its search today. for a family reportedly missing at sea. the search started on sunday off the coast of monterey. kron 4's justine waldman tells us. why the coast guard now thinks the panicked distress call. could be a hoax. it might have been all done for nothing. >> reporter: the coast guard, national guard and the navy. searched the choppy and cold waters of the pacific boat and helicopter looking for a lost family on a crippled 29-foot sailboat. all based on this distress radio call. but with no missing persons reports, never finding a boat with a name even similar to charmblow and no sign of a wreckage. crews suspended their search for a couple and two young children. now thinking, a possible phony made up that panicked call for help. >> "now the coast guard will continue to check with marinas to a missing boat and use other techonolgy to track that radio distress call. this is a dangerous saturation. situation-calling ie distress call. is a felony. on yerba buena island justine waldman kron 4 news
